Review: Brius.com

I've never been too fond of the bargain basement web hosting companies. I've always found that the low prices also meant low quality and reliability. In the case of Bius.com, your $4 a month gets you a solid hosting plan, though it is lacking a few features in comparison with some of their (slightly more) expensive competitors.

Initial Impression
Their website looks good, though I did find a small graphical error on their hosting information page. I told the online technical support person about it so I'm sure it will get dealt with. The website's feel is pretty modern with darker colors and complimenting designs. I like it and I'm sure the design took quite some time to work out.

They only offer a few hosting packages (standard, business, and enterprise) and the prices range from $3.95 a month to over $20 a month. We chose the least expensive for this evaluation.

Value Factor
There are other hosts that offer more space and features for just a few dollars more per month. Brius allots you 500 megabytes of storage, but at a cost of just $3.95 a month, it's to be expected. The real value with Brius comes from the flexibility of the hosting itself: integrated cPanel and PHP support make it easy for you to track statistics or modify specific portions of your website.

Brius has a 99.9% uptime guarantee, which is pretty standard, and a 14 day money-back guarantee (which definitely isn't standard). I have to give them kudos for standing behind their quality like that; not a lot of hosting companies offer any kind of money-back guarantee.

Reliability and Performance
Our test website was pretty basic and had three main features: an iFrame, a text heavy page, and a PHP redirect. Brius was able to handle them all quite well and we experienced no problems during our 14 day evaluation period.

We had three unique testers from three different locations (Canada, the United States, and England) attempt to reach each page and all of them were successful. Our test site also responded very well (really well, actually) to ping requests from all around the world. Overall, very high quality hosting here.

Conclusion
If you need a website for the lowest possible cost and you don't need to have a ridiculous amount of storage you have just found your host. $3.95 just can't be beat, and 500 megabytes is more than enough space for your average user. Chances are good that you'll never hit your limit or even be aware that it's there.
